Skinny people may be the envy of heavy people, who see them as someone who can eat whatever they want, stuffing down cheeseburgers, ice cream sundaes, chocolate bars, and anything else, and not gain a single pound.
But many of these skinny people would love to gain weight. Their desire to gain weight, is as strong as a heavy person's desire to lose weight. They suffer from low self-esteem, they may feel that the lack of body mass makes them the target of bullies. They hate taking off their shirt at the beach. They may feel anxious about wearing shorts, for fear of showing off their skinny legs.
There is a great emotional toll paid, when you are struggling with a skinny body.
And being skinny is not as healthy as some people believe it to be. Where almost every thing you read about health issues is the danger of extra weight, as it applies to heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and numerous other health problems. With the assumption being that the skinnier the better, well this is just not true.
People who are extremely thin tend to have a weaker immune system, which opens them up to more infections, and increases the potential for surgical complications and slower recovery time when they become ill.
The biggest reason for someone being skinny is genetics. Genes determine your hair color, eye color, your body type, and most everything else. Your personality and environment can also be factors. A fast metabolism could be the cause.
Another possible reason for extreme thinness is that you are the type that is always in motion, the kind that can't sit still for a moment. Maybe you're very active in sports, or always walking wherever you have to go, burning more calories then you take in.
Other reasons for low body weight could be due to depression, illness, stress, and side effects from drugs.
Some healthy ways to gain weight would be to first go to your doctor for a complete examination, to determine if any illness, or drug reaction is causing you to be underweight.
If you are given a clean bill of health, you can begin your journey of gaining weight. You must consume more calories than you expend. Increase your protein intake. Some good sources of protein are: chicken, turkey, beef, cheese, milk and eggs.
Begin a workout regimen. Your goal is to work up to a heavy weight low rep routine. This is the way to increase muscle mass. Increase carbohydrate consumption. This will give you the energy to do your workouts.
Try snacking between meals with nuts, dried fruit, and whatever else you enjoy that is high in calories.
You can try eating five meals instead of three. Drink water a half hour before and after your meals, so there's more room for your food.
If you are not getting the weight gain results you are looking for, try a protein supplement product to increase your weight gain. A high quality multivitamin mineral supplement is a good idea.
You can keep a diary of calorie consumption to be sure you are eating as much as you believe you are.
Try adding nutritious snacks throughout the day, to add more calories to your total.
Choose milk and fruit juices instead of soda for a healthier weight gain.
