The Dangers of the Outdoors - Poison Ivy Plants

Hi king trips, picnics and other outdoor activities are fun for the whole family because you get to bond and appreciate the beauty and comfort that nature provides you with. But sometimes, there are potential dangers in the great outdoors that could take the fun off your family trip.
Not many of these dangers are mobile and active---on the contrary, most of them are idle and non-motile, such as plants and fungus. Some plants, like poison ivy plants are one of these dangers. These plants easily blend in with the background and could cause harm to you
and your family if caution is not exercised.

Poison ivy is known as Toxicodendron radicans to the scientific world. These plants are capable of producing a compound called urushiol. Urushiol induces rashes and irritations to appear on the skin. This condition is called urushiol- induced contact dermatitis. This condition is a hypersensitivity reaction to the compound and almost 15-30% of people can get allergic reactions to urushiol exposure. The compound can cause anaphylactic shock if the person is exposed to large doses of urushiol, or is simply extremely hypersensitive to it.
Urushiol makes the skin develop large rashes that soon erupt into blisters that ooze.

Not only do poison ivy plants pose threat when it comes into contact with the skin, but it also causes other potentially life-threatening conditions to other parts of the body. It can cause lung lining inflammation and damage that cause pain and difficulty breathing when the plant is burned and the fumes and ashes of the plant are inhaled, and if eaten, the stomach, kidneys and other internal organs can get damaged and inflamed as well.
Dry and dead poison ivy is not safe to handle still because urushiol oils are very stable and long lasting. Urushiol-containing plant oils can remain intact for up to several years.

Face to Diabetes

What is diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels, that result from defects in insulin secretion, or action, or both. Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as diabetes (as it will be in this article) was first identified as a disease associated with "sweet urine," and excessive muscle loss in the ancient world. Elevated levels of blood glucose (hyperglycemia) lead to spillage of glucose into the urine, hence the term sweet urine.

Normally, blood glucose levels are tightly controlled by insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin lowers the blood glucose level. When the blood glucose elevates (for example, after eating food), insulin is released from the pancreas to normalize the glucose level. In patients with diabetes, the absence or insufficient production of insulin causes hyperglycemia. Diabetes is a chronic medical condition, meaning that although it can be controlled, it lasts a lifetime.

What is the impact of diabetes?

Over time, diabetes can lead to blindness, kidney failure, and nerve damage. These types of damage are the result of damage to small vessels, referred to as microvascular disease. Diabetes is also an important factor in accelerating the hardening and narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), leading to strokes, coronary heart disease, and other large blood vessel diseases. This is referred to as macrovascular disease. Diabetes affects approximately 17 million people (about 8% of the population) in the United States. In addition, an estimated additional 12 million people in the United States have diabetes and don't even know it.

From an economic perspective, the total annual cost of diabetes in 1997 was estimated to be 98 billion dollars in the United States. The per capita cost resulting from diabetes in 1997 amounted to $10,071.00; while healthcare costs for people without diabetes incurred a per capita cost of $2,699.00. During this same year, 13.9 million days of hospital stay were attributed to diabetes, while 30.3 million physician office visits were diabetes related. Remember, these numbers reflect only the population in the United States. Globally, the statistics are staggering.

Diabetes is the third leading cause of death in the United States after heart disease and cancer.

What causes diabetes?

Insufficient production of insulin (either absolutely or relative to the body's needs), production of defective insulin (which is uncommon), or the inability of cells to use insulin properly and efficiently leads to hyperglycemia and diabetes. This latter condition affects mostly the cells of muscle and fat tissues, and results in a condition known as "insulin resistance." This is the primary problem in type 2 diabetes. The absolute lack of insulin, usually secondary to a destructive process affecting the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas, is the main disorder in type 1 diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, there also is a steady decline of beta cells that adds to the process of elevated blood sugars. Essentially, if someone is resistant to insulin, the body can, to some degree, increase production of insulin and overcome the level of resistance. After time, if production decreases and insulin cannot be released as vigorously, hyperglycemia develops.

Glucose is a simple sugar found in food. Glucose is an essential nutrient that provides energy for the proper functioning of the body cells. Carbohydrates are broken down in the small intestine and the glucose in digested food is then absorbed by the intestinal cells into the bloodstream, and is carried by the bloodstream to all the cells in the body where it is utilized. However, glucose cannot enter the cells alone and needs insulin to aid in its transport into the cells. Without insulin, the cells become starved of glucose energy despite the presence of abundant glucose in the bloodstream. In certain types of diabetes, the cells' inability to utilize glucose gives rise to the ironic situation of "starvation in the midst of plenty". The abundant, unutilized glucose is wastefully excreted in the urine.

Insulin is a hormone that is produced by specialized cells (beta cells) of the pancreas. (The pancreas is a deep-seated organ in the abdomen located behind the stomach.) In addition to helping glucose enter the cells, insulin is also important in tightly regulating the level of glucose in the blood. After a meal, the blood glucose level rises. In response to the increased glucose level, the pancreas normally releases more insulin into the bloodstream to help glucose enter the cells and lower blood glucose levels after a meal. When the blood glucose levels are lowered, the insulin release from the pancreas is turned down. It is important to note that even in the fasting state there is a low steady release of insulin than fluctuates a bit and helps to maintain a steady blood sugar level during fasting. In normal individuals, such a regulatory system helps to keep blood glucose levels in a tightly controlled range. As outlined above, in patients with diabetes, the insulin is either absent, relatively insufficient for the body's needs, or not used properly by the body. All of these factors cause elevated levels of blood glucose (hyperglycemia).

Symptoms Diabetes Warning Signs

Many times, the early symptoms diabetes appear to be so subtle that they are seldom interpreted as a matter of concern regarding health status. Also, they can be attributed to many other dysfunctional conditions in the body which mask their actual appearance.

A typical case is when an individual experiences thirst. This is more likely to be interpreted as a normal bodily function especially if it is a hot day and the person is perspiring. It is okay since the body can well be responding to the climatic changes in the environment.

The true facts however are never considered. It is concluded that if the day is hot and the body is losing fluid through evaporation then it is safe to be thirsty and drink plenty of water. This is the most logical explanation for thirst.

There are open considerations for attention when a competition between the thirst and bathroom visits is established. As often as the thirst is quenched so is the inclination to void. This can be mistaken for normal bodily activity since fluid intake should always equal flushing out.

As a sequel to this thirst and frequent visits to the bathroom syndrome there appears to be a competition between thirst and urination. The bathroom visits are as usual as when water is taken into the body. Most definitely this is remarkable enough to gain attention. Usually thirst and frequency of urination are accompanied by unique desires and intolerances.

These desires are hunger; sleepiness leading to lethargy; inclination to simply rest; impulse to be inactive and non responsive to stimulations due to insidious tiredness. At this point these yearnings are so subtle that they can be attributed to aging, grief and generally emotional imbalances such as depression among a number of associating factors.

Along with these radical changes is the intolerance to sugar which masks a taste bud altercation when the tongue gets burnt with heat or cold. Remarkably this sugar intolerance is often due to drowsiness. Persons who subtly recognize this just avoids sugar.

In conclusion, early symptoms diabetes can be misunderstood, misinterpreted or simply taken lightly. The real concerns are unexplained weight loss which accompanies the initial observations. The need to be alert to changes in the body is always a crucial thing in keeping abreast with what may be some serious health issues later.

Common Fever

A few home remedies I've tried have been very helpful when I or my family is going through a fever. First of all it's very important to keep your self hydrated when you are sick and especially if you're having a fever. Drinking plenty of water and orange juice can very beneficial. The orange juice helps with digestion, increased urinary output, promotes antibodies for faster healing and recovery. It gives energy and vitamins, over all a great source for fighting fevers.

Symptoms of Common Fever: -

The symptoms of common fever are body pain, trembling, dehydration, vomiting and sickness, constipation, sweating due to fast respiration process. Another sign of common fever is high temperature which can leads to mental disturbances and death.

Causes of Common Fever: -

The actual cause of common fever is the accumulation of the toxic due to unhealthy living and wrong feeding habit. It also caused by infection.

Home Remedies for Common Fever: -

• Add a tsp of glucose or honey to a fresh juice of apricot. Apart from reducing the fever, it also satiates the need for liquids and gets rid of harmful products.
• Grapefruit juice also acts favorably in curing common fever. Prepare ½ glass of grapefruit juice and add equal quantity of water to the concentrated mixture. Intake this mixture once a day to get relieved from the burning sensation.
• A person suffering from common fever is suggested to have lots of oranges. It increases the energy in the body and promotes resistance against infection.
• Another effective remedy to cure common fever would be to boil a cup of water. Add 1 tsp of turmeric powder, some ginger pieces, onion pieces, lemon grass, ½ a tsp of black pepper and 5-6 basil leaves. Intake this mixture three times a day to treat common fever.
• Avoid eating solid foods until the fever is gone. You can replace the foods by drinking plenty of distilled water and/or juices.
• If the fever does not exceed 102 degrees let it run its course. It helps the body to fight infection and eliminate toxins.
• The juice of grape fruit is a valuable diet during common fever. Take half glass of grape juice with same amount of water. It will help to reduce the burning sensation.

Diet Tips for Common Fever: -

• Easily digestible diet is advised for the patient
• Drink as much water as you can in order to replace fluid loss. It will also help to bring down body temperature.
• Drinking the juice of the leaves of tamarind (imli) with some turmeric (haldi) powder and cold water to get rid of infections and fever
• Small amounts of whole grain bread or biscuits can be taken with milk. Heavy foods that are difficult to digest like fried foods, fast foods, meat, chicken, fish, and raw foods should be completely avoided.

People with disabilities and social life in Jordan Read more

In a Jordanian community, ‘happy' and ‘sad' events play important roles in the social lives of the people (Simister and Yunis 1999). ‘Happy' events may include marriage, births and successful recovery from surgery, illness or accidents. ‘Sad' occasions may include funerals, illness and injury. Exchanging visits with family, relatives, friends and neighbours is the main social activity for people, especially those living in rural areas. Traditional leisure activities within the community include visiting, eating, drinking (tea or coffee), playing cards and talking. However, since new technology has been introduced the social family gathering is being replaced by watching television, searching internet and videos.

Visiting individuals when they have health problems is a must for friends, relatives and neighbours (Abu-Rida 1998). Abu-Rida suggested that visiting friends and neighbours when they are ill is a religious obligation. However, al-Dawalibi (1998) argues that social relationships between Arab people, including the visiting of ill people, dates back to pre-Islamic times.

Apart from the home, the other important place for socialising among Muslims is the place of worship (the mosque) which exists in every populated area in Jordan. In Muslim countries the mosque is not only for praying but also for socialising and making friends (Hathout 1995). Islamic teaching requires that each Muslim pray five times a day, preferably in the mosque. Prayer (salah) is to be performed with mental concentration and physical movement to attain spiritual uplift. Although it can be performed alone, it is preferable to perform it with another or in a group. To perform salah, a Muslim has to perform his or her ablutions (wudhu') to make sure that hygiene of body, clothing, and place are attained before performing salah..

The Qur'ān is the principle religious book in Islam and is the spoken word of Allah (God). It is divided into 30 parts containing 114 chapters (or sura). Sunnah is complementary to the Qur'ān and refers to anything connected with the Prophet Muhammad, including his sayings and his actions and descriptions of his way of life. The Hadith comprises a further collection of the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad.

Women are prevented by neither the Qur'ān nor the Sunnah from entering mosques but, regulated by either local rules or by habit, mosques have in many cases been closed to women (Hathout 1995). Women have therefore resorted to praying in their homes. Prayer involves several positions, including standing, bowing and prostration (going down on the knees, then placing the forehead on the floor). However, if a Muslim is travelling or sick, he or she is allowed to pray while sitting or sleeping. These customs imply that it may be difficult for people with disabilities ( PWD) who have physical disabilities or are incontinent to prayer in mosques and this may contribute to their social isolation. This social isolation can be greater for men than for women, since women already pray at home.

The mosque is administered by the religious leader (the Imam) whose role is similar to that of the vicar or priest in the Christian church. The Imam leads prayers five times a day and preaches every Friday (Friday Khutbah). In Jordan most men visit the mosque to listen to the weekly Friday sermon. The Friday sermons are also televised and may discuss religious matters as well as social topics. The Friday sermon is an important platform for educating the Muslim community and for reminding people of their roles as Muslims, including being conscious of their brief life in this world and updating them on current issues affecting Islam and Muslims (Hathout 1995).

The Friday sermon could be used as a community support for PWD by disseminating information about disability and the prevention of disease or the introduction of new ideas to the community. In Jordan this may be more appropriate than disseminating information by pamphlet since a high percentage (about 17 per cent) of people in Bedouin and rural areas are illiterate (Abu-Jaber 1991). However, the content of the Friday Khutbah is under the control of the government and therefore any arrangements about its content would need to be arranged with the government.

Another community facility that could be used to introduce new ideas or to disseminate information about disability is the school. In all cities and most villages in Jordan there are schools; school teachers are often the only source of information in rural areas and are highly appreciated by the community. Involving schoolteachers in any community development for PWD may be advantageous for both service providers and recipients.

In larger urban areas, for example Amman, social and sports clubs exist which are similar to those in more developed countries. However, these clubs are not accessible to everybody because they are private and relatively expensive. Their existence implies that PWD living in cities may have more chances to socialise than PWD living in rural areas. However, the use of sports and social clubs will be limited to those who can afford them.

In Bedouin areas and remote villages the madafa or aldywan is still the main place for people to socialise. This can be a large hall or a room in the tribal leader's house and is similar to the village hall in Britain. Attendance at the madafa is restricted to men and all men have to participate in community activities while the women in the village exchange visits and gather in each other's houses over a cup of tea or coffee or a meal. In the madafa the Sheik or the village leader (the mukhtar) holds an influential position. Men usually meet in the madafa to discuss matters related to the tribe and the support needed for everyone in the community. This support may include financial aid or help in solving a social problem within the community. The source of any financial support will be from within the community. The tribal leader is important in terms of care for patients in the community or the introduction of new ideas of community support. This is because the tribal leader holds an influential position and is consulted about all matters by the people in that community. Providers of community services and health professionals who work with PWD must acknowledge this important role when disseminating information or proposing new ideas in the community. Any ideas or interventions proposed without the agreement of the tribal leader will not work and will be rejected by the people.

All activities in either the mosque or in the madafa take place in a sitting position on the floor with shoes removed. An individual using a wheelchair or adaptive footwear or who is unable to sit on the floor may be unable to participate and socialise. A male with disabilities who is unable to participate in community responsibilities may find him socially isolated.

Taking Care of Your Overall Dental Health

One of the most common procedures in cosmetic dentistry is teeth whitening, it seems that every day more and more people from all over the world want to have brighter and more attractive smiles, this is mostly because a whiter smile is considered an indicator of good oral health and it also turns out to be visually pleasant. The main problem with this cover up procedure is that those who've decided to only whiten their teeth are 100% thinking about the cosmetic benefits of this dental treatment instead of being the last step off a carefully planned oral treatment which has been made to improve the overall dental health.

Teeth whitening is also very popular because it is virtually a painless procedure, those who are interested only have to set an appointment with their dentist who are according to the budget of the person will recommend a home-based treatment or a faster method such as laser whitening. With so many white smiles most people will assume that there isn't a single problem with the fact of the matter is that tooth whitening is being used to cover other problems.

It has been estimated that nearly 9 out of 10 Americans suffer from some sort of tooth decay and one in three Americans over the age of 30 suffer from gum disease which is also known as periodontis. According to researchers who conducted the same study not many people are getting a sufficient amount of fluoride which is the substance which prevents tooth decay and has all the minerals necessary in order to restore and strengthening the Enamel in teeth.

As you see, having a wide smile is not all there is to it when it comes to oral health, paying a visit to the dentist at least twice a year in order to get regular cleanups in a fluoride/sealant treatment can keep your teeth truly healthy. Your dentist may also recommend other procedures in order to prevent tooth decay, formation of cavities and gum diseases which are very hard to treat.

If you are genuinely interested in improving the overall dental health as well as the appearance of your smile you should seriously consider paying a visit to the dentist who will be able to refer you to a specialist if your condition requires special treatment before a cosmetic treatments such as teeth whitening is performed.

Cancer

Discomfort or experiencing trouble or pain during food swallowing can be a usual occurrence and most often it could be an indication of eating food or drinking liquids very quickly. But if the trouble with eating or swallowing continues regularly it could be associated with esophageal cancer.

Every person is created to swallow or eat food easily unless and until they are affected by some kind of disease or illness. Some people might find trouble eating food as they might not have properly chewed the food or might be due to the dryness of a specific food substance. The troubled eating might be due to certain difficulty to pass the food from mouth inside stomach. This type of condition is called as dysphagia, mostly experienced by elderly and young kids. It might be noticed that when someone is suffering from bad cough or when unwell swallowing becomes difficult and troubled.

Trouble eating with esophageal cancer is fatal malignancy often which is developed in the hollow esophagus muscular canal tissues. It begins in the inside layers of esophagus lining and starts to grow outwards. Over time it can completely block liquid and food passage making swallowing hard and painful.

During the early stages, sufferers can get hiccups and voice can become hoarse with higher calcium levels, but even the symptoms of esophageal cancer might not be seen till the cancer is in the advanced stage. Doctors if suspect trouble eating with esophageal cancer normally asks the patients to undergo special x-raying or barium swallow to clear their doubts. Even though it might not be cured the symptoms and their intensities can be lowered to a great extent.

Trouble eating and swallowing food can be classified into two main kinds of dysphagia called esophageal dysphagia and oropharyngeal dysphagia. Oropharyngeal dysphagia might be due to the malfunctioning of nerves which are responsible for chewing food and swallowing. In this condition the throat muscles are weakened severely that sufferers find great discomfort and pain during swallowing. Esophageal cancer and neurological disorder or damage might be the main reason for oropharyngeal dysphagia.

If a person feels that food has got stuck inside the throat is known as esophageal dysphagia. This condition might be due to old age where the person's esophagus gets weak like other muscles and results in troubled eating, esophageal ring and stricture – esophagus gets narrowed by various factors and looks similar to a ring and prevents from getting through the esophagus smoothly, GERD or Gastroesophageal reflux disease – causing troubled eating, food can get stuck inside the esophagus resulting in troubled eating, scleroderma – tissues of the person becomes hard or due to treatment of cancer.

Anti-Aging Nutrition: Beneficial Nutrients to Stay Away From Illness

Staying healthy, doing regular exercises, and eating healthy will provide you more energy. Anti-aging is a comprehensive program for the health of the body and must be approached by using different types of anti-aging treatments. So let's take a look at how you can reverse your aging process. One of the first anti-aging treatments is the supplements like vitamins and minerals, which will help you to start the detoxification of your body. Antioxidants can help slow the aging process by combating free radicals that attack the body's cells and possibly weaken your immune system.

The anti-aging nutritional supplements could be found in the form of a capsule but should be first consulted and approved by your doctor. The best way is to try to find natural antioxidants as this type of medication have fewer side effects compared to other treatments. Some green tea natural anti-aging treatments can be vitamin C and vitamin E. Coffee is also a great antioxidant to protect against free radicals, which will also protect the cells from various types of cancer and keep you healthy.

Anti-aging treatments that use nutritional supplements not only lead to anti-aging but because of our
busy lifestyle, most of the people will forget certain nutrients that should be included in their diet, as the anti-aging supplements and vitamins have been added minerals and calcium to help balance its anti-aging nutritional treatment plan. Remember anti-aging is a combination of several different anti-aging treatments that must be balanced together to keep your body healthy. An anti-aging diet and exercise are very important for overall vitality. It is also very important to have the right food. A proper anti-aging diet must be high in antioxidants, which include foods that have high omega-3 fatty acids as well as plenty of fruits and vegetables. Green leafy vegetables, grains of barley, or any raw nuts and good extra virgin olive oil are known to regenerate cells and make them stronger. You should use organic vegetables when possible, in an anti-aging diet, there is less waste of chemicals that end up on your diet. Anti-aging nutritional therapy can cause changes to the side effects associated with age and reverse these effects by giving more energy and enthusiasm.

Some of the foods that accelerate aging and free radicals would be foods that contain large amounts of saturated fats and trans fatty acids. Always keep in balance what you eat, the lifestyle choices are yours to keep so you can control with good nutrition and also with the anti-aging supplement treatment plan. In addition, regular exercise and staying active will help you build and maintain strong muscles. However, before you plan to select a diet plan or program, it is wise to consult a specialist and take his or her guidelines. These experts will assist you in finding the right type of antiaging diet and programs you require. Keep in mind, nutrition is where you must start at first in order to get healthy.

Why You Need Serious Skin Care to Address Skin Aging Problems

Let's face it. You need a serious skincare product in order to effectively address all of the problems that are causing your skin to age, but to be honest there are few companies in the cosmetics industry that seem to care what it is that you need. The majority of the anti-aging products being developed are virtually ineffective in tackling the variety of issues that contribute to skin wrinkling and sagging. The quality of the ingredients that typically go into an anti-aging product is often dismal, and many of the commonly used compounds are even questionable from a safety standpoint. The cosmetic companies use this type of ingredients in order to make their products because they cost almost nothing. Most of the ingredients are man-made and virtually worthless to you. One sign of a serious skincare product is that it won't contain a single synthetic compound, as all these ingredients offer you are minuscule amounts of antioxidants, vitamins, and other essential nutrients. What your product needs in order to give you the full spectrum of nutrients and antioxidants your skin needs to become healthy are all-natural compounds such as plant oils, extracts, and proteins. You will find that by using a natural formula that supplies you with an ample dose of antioxidants your wrinkles will be noticeably reduced. This is because these nutrients will reverse the oxidative breakdown of the cells in your skin, which was caused by the activity of free radicals. Once this repair begins, all that you need are compounds effective in building up your collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. The products that qualify as serious skincare formulas are not the ones that the manufacturers tell you will smooth your skin by topically introducing animal-derived collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid.

Most companies peddle a formula like this, and I can honestly tell you that they won't work to reduce your wrinkles. Your skin cannot absorb compounds as molecularly dense as these. What you want in order to increase the collagen in your skin are natural compounds like active Manuka honey and avocado oil that encourage the creation of new tissue. A specially developed compound known as nano-lip belle H-EQ10 is also incredibly effective in raising collagen production levels. This ingredient is basically coenzyme Q10 that has been had its molecules broken down to microscopic size in order to increase penetration and effectiveness. Truly serious skincare products designed to reduce wrinkling will feature a protein and enzyme fusion called Cynergy TK, and Phytessence Wakame kelp extract. The former increases the production of both collagen and elastin in the skin, while the latter offers needed protection to your hyaluronic acid. Phytessence Wakame has the ability to control the degradation of your hyaluronic acid polymer caused by enzymes in the skin. Make no mistake about it. Serious skincare products are what you need if you are going to have a realistic chance of achieving your goals. All-natural formulas featuring the ingredients I have listed here are about as serious as it gets. If you'd like to learn more about little-known but clinically tested natural ingredients that are used for treating aging skin, visit my website today.
